Criminal Defense Attorney In Wyandotte, MI

The 27th District Court on Biddle Avenue covers two cities, Wyandotte and Riverview, so a Riverview address does not mean a Riverview courtroom. William P. Hackett defends charges in that court and, when a felony binds over, in the circuit court in Detroit.

Two Cities Sharing a Courtroom

The 27th has jurisdiction over matters arising in the city of Wyandotte and the city of Riverview. Two municipalities, two police departments, one courthouse at 2015 Biddle Ave.

There is a name trap here worth flagging. River Rouge sounds like it belongs with Riverview and it does not; River Rouge is served by the 25th District Court in Lincoln Park. Three Downriver communities with similar names answering to two different courts produces more missed hearings than it should.

If there is any doubt, the court named on the citation or the notice is the one that governs, not the city on your driver’s license.

A River City and Its Seasons

Wyandotte sits on the Detroit River, and the water is part of how the city lives. Biddle Avenue runs along it through the downtown, with Fort Street carrying the heavier traffic a few blocks inland.

That geography brings a charge most inland communities rarely see. Operating a vessel under the influence is its own offense in Michigan, written into the natural resources code rather than the vehicle code, with its own penalty structure and its own definition of what counts as operating. It is not a boating version of a traffic ticket, and treating it as one is a mistake. Our drunk driving defense page covers the road offenses, which run on a parallel but separate track.

Wyandotte also draws large crowds to its riverfront during the summer, and where an incident happens in the middle of a crowd there are usually more witnesses and more phone video than either side initially realizes. That evidence tends to disappear quickly unless someone goes looking for it early.

The same is true of the license consequence people assume follows automatically. A marine offense and a road offense are governed by different statutes, and what happens to a driver license after one is not simply what happens after the other. Assuming the two work the same way is how people miss a deadline that mattered.

Charges the Firm Handles In Wyandotte

Downtown Wyandotte draws people from across Downriver in the evenings and during its summer events, which means a share of the docket involves people who were visiting rather than living here. That does not change the law, but it does change the practical questions about scheduling and appearances.

A First Offense Is Not a Foregone Conclusion

People frequently arrive at the 27th assuming that a first charge means a guilty plea and whatever follows. That assumption gives away the part of the case where the most is available.

Whether the stop was lawful, whether testing was performed and recorded correctly, and whether the reports actually support each element of the charge are questions with documented answers. Our first offense OWI page sets out what a first drunk driving charge involves, and the implied consent page covers what happens to a license after a refusal, which runs on its own timeline separate from the criminal case.

The License Clock Runs Separately

An arrest creates two timelines, and only one of them is the court date. The criminal case moves at the pace of the 27th District Court docket. The driver license consequence follows an administrative process with its own deadlines, and those deadlines do not pause while the criminal case is pending.

This catches people regularly. A person focused entirely on the charge can lose the chance to contest the license consequence simply because the window closed while they were waiting for a hearing on something else. Where a breath test was refused, the period to request a hearing is particularly short.

Our implied consent and breathalyzer refusal page explains that process, and the license restoration page covers what is involved once a license has already been lost.

Talking To William Hackett About a Wyandotte Case

The firm appears throughout the Downriver courts and across Wayne County. On a case at the 27th, the first steps are confirming which of the two cities the matter arose in, getting the reports and any video, and identifying the license consequences early, since those often run on a faster clock than the court case does.

His background is on the attorney page, the charges he handles are on the practice areas page, and the office is reachable through the contact page or at (313) 485-4800. Every case turns on its own facts, and no attorney can promise a particular result.

Neighboring communities the firm serves include Southgate, Lincoln Park, Allen Park and Taylor. The full list is on the service areas page.

Wyandotte Questions

Which Cities Does the 27th District Court Cover?

Wyandotte and Riverview. Both cities have their own police departments but share the courthouse at 2015 Biddle Ave in Wyandotte.

Is River Rouge Handled By the 27th District Court?

No, and this is a common mix up. Despite the similar name, River Rouge is served by the 25th District Court in Lincoln Park, together with Ecorse. Always go by the court named on your paperwork.

Is Drunk Boating the Same Charge As Drunk Driving?

No. Operating a vessel under the influence is a separate Michigan offense with its own statute and its own penalty structure, and its own definition of what counts as operating. It should not be treated as a boating version of a traffic offense.

Where Does a Wyandotte Felony Go?

It is arraigned at the 27th District Court and, if it binds over after the preliminary examination, moves to the Third Circuit Court in Detroit, since Wyandotte is in Wayne County.

Is a First Offense Worth Fighting?

Often, yes. Whether the stop was lawful, whether testing was performed and recorded properly, and whether the reports support every element of the charge are real questions. Treating a first charge as automatic gives up the stage where the most can be done.
